Week 4

Week 4
Task #1
Teaching vocab : nouns ( a doctor, a school a cat...)
Grammar point: Personal pronouns in negatives and questions
Visual props: colorful bricks, puppets from the Goldilocks story and flashcards and everything that I see useful in the classroom. I sometimes get my motivation during the class so I use it instantly
Age group: 7-8 years old
Kids enjoy playing, when they see learning English as a game and fun, they will learn it with ease and joy.
That is how I think grammar should be taught to young learners - through games.
For teaching personal pronouns I use the characters of the Goldilocs story: he - the Father bear (puppet)+ the blue brick writte HE. She - the Mother bear (puppet)+ the red brick written SHE..... We all sit on the floor while presenting the pronouns. Then, I mix the bricks and the puppets and kids try to match them. They enjoy doing this.
Next I tell them I am going to be a student and they are my teachers: I put the picture of my daughter with the HE brick and pretend to have a good match and the smile Nooo, Sheee :))))) I do this acting several times almost every class :)
I give them bricks and paper and they write the personal pronouns on them. Its more fun then writing them in their notebooks...
Then I use their bricks and flashcards when teaching sentences. HE IS A DOCTOR. SHE ISN'T A TEACHER. ARE THEY HAPPY? We learn the place of the NOT word, the AM, IS, ARE "run in front" when we want to form a question. We mix the bricks and the flashcards and make sentences....
Usually there are some kids who want to write the sentences on the smart board, they do it...
I monitor them, I look at their faces, their eyes, I feel them during my class, and my class has been successful if there are smiles on their lips, if they enjoy doing the activities, and when they say Renata don't "stop" the class :)))))

  1. Dear Renata,

I can clearly see here that you used a very contextualized and concrete approach to work grammar with your students. Analyzing and playing with sentences they know or that have come from them makes all the difference. I liked in special the idea of having some students writing the sentences on the board. Congrats!

    Hugs,

    Juan
