TASK 1: What do you understand by affective language learning?
For me, affective learning happens when studants are confortable with the teacher and the language, they feel safe as they got used with it and they can be who they are and share their feelings and opinions. It happens when they have choices, work toguether as a teem and at the same time express themselves with all their particularities. The teacher responds to studants demands and create memories throught criative activities, using songs, dialogues and playing characters. Also, by creating an affective enviroment using circle time, warm up, criative communication to get their attention and surprise elements. The teacher is concerned about studants compreension, if they had enought time to live the language and always gives them feedback about what they learned and worked in the classroom, celebrating each step.
What are some ways that you can foster it next week.
I´ll tell you about my experience. I always sing hello and goodbye songs (playing the guitar) and my studants use to like it a lot, because is a funny way to welcome them and say goodbye. I always look them in the eye and call them by their names. After the course T.Y.L.A , I introduced the circle time after singing hello song and It has being really enjoyable. They have the oportunity to greet each other, to talk about how they´re feeling and what they remember about last class. I also prepare them for what they´re going to learn. I observed that their attention increased, they got more interested and engaged. Anotherthing was that now, I always give them choices to do the activities and I have the care to ask the ones that normaly finish first to help the others.

Graziela,
ReplyDeleteYou have mentioned important components of affective language learning and certainly your students feel the difference you make in their learning.
Circle time is a very important moment and I am happy you are living it with your students.
Wish you great memorable classes!
