Task #1

Task #1
****What aspects are important in your opinion to take in consideration when planning a storytelling activity?
I will consider aspects in the planning and also during the storytime, I had some ideas, and I learned most of them with Juan.
1. Pick a story according with level of english.
First of all, we have to pick a story that the target language does not exceed the level of english of the student, or pick known stories that they might have learnt in their mother tongue.
We don't want frustrated kids.
With my beginner kids I use books like, good bye moon, the very hungry caterpillar, three little pigs and more with simple vocabulary.
2. Stimulate all learning senses.
In every class we have to take into account all the ways of learning in order to stimulate the majority of them if we can. In a story we can work listening by of course telling it.
For visual kids, by showing pictures of every important episode of the story.
for kinesthetic kids we can try to perform the story again, or make a memorable craft, like a puppet, they can retell the story after.
3. Let them talk, create, invent, imagine, and change the story. Before, while and post.
I make like stages during telling a story. I...
- Show them a picture and let them predict the name of the story
- Then, I start and make questions about the story, what would happen next, how the end is going to be etc.
- Change the ending: Is important to let them change the ending just to hear their ideas, practice english and blow up their imagination.
4. Listen, listen.
Children love to make questions, and its difficult to keep them all quite during the storytime. We have to learn how to listen to them. That is part of affective language learning!!!!!
5. Encourage listening and reading.
As a homework we can assign to tell the story to parents or if they are old enough, they can read books to parents and then tell the class about them.
With stories we can work also dicipline, imagination, concentration, critical thinking and more.
How do they affect the moment in which we are with our students?
We make amazing moments for our children but I wont last only a moment, it will last for the rest of their lives.
What kind of memory do we want to create? An Awkward memory or amazing memories?
When I was a child I never had such a time. All stories were read by the teacher, without pictures, performings or puppets.
I didn´t like to read!
They made me like that, through story telling I will create kids interested in reading, giving opinions and have curiosity.
Let's make of that moment something unforgettable!!!!
So true... Great point Raquel! As you said, we want them to enjoy the class, to feel the story, to be motivated and learn in an amusing way!
ReplyDeleteRaquel,
ReplyDeleteYou are becoming the teacher that you have not had, just like me.
You have outlined very important aspects of planning a story. Being able to think about the possible challenges allows us to be free to receive students' questions and stories.
You can have all the strategies that you have planned for both visual and kinaesthetic learners as long as you watch out timing. I have recently had students come up with the noises that can be heard as well. Great fun!
Remember that when we connect their stories with our story we give birth to language that is alive!
