Discussion 3

Discussion 3
1) Where do reward systems such as Classdojo sit in an affective classroom?
2) How do you help teachers feel comfortable teaching affectively, in particular using puppets in the classroom?
3) Is Dogme: Teaching Unplugged written by Thornbury and Meddins a adult version of teaching affectively?
4) Education systems around the world are shifting towards more tests is this at odds with affective teaching?
5) Is technology an appropriate tool to use in the affective classroom?
6) Is affective teaching embraced in many countries at a national level and integrated into the curriculum of all schools?
7) Has there been much research in to the effectiveness of affectiveness in the classroom?
8) Most course books are still organised around a grammar type syllabus if you produced an affective coursebook series for ESL how would you organise it?
9) How do you counter the argument from the parent who says this is just lovey-dovey crap you need to be teaching my child grammar and how to pass tests!
10) If you could be a puppet which one would you be and why?

  1. 10. I believe I would probably be a very clumsy pig. I have always loved pigs and I am often falling so I believe that if I were to become a puppet that's who I would be. However, I also like hedgehogs so I could own a hedgehog and its problem would be that he cannot own inflatable beds, or jump in bouncy castles.

  2. Great thought-provoking questions.Testing and affective learning do seem to be at odds with each other. :)

  3. Really interesting questions, Damien. I am interested in Q5. too. Throwing my hat in the ring here I think the answer (from my VAST amount of experience in in affective learning!!!) could be yes - I mean we've used videos (and photos) on this course to great effect, and Juan has quite a lot on his Pinterest. And Juan did talk about asking students what their favourite music or songs were and  playing the as a welcome...so am assuming tech has some role.

  4. Hi Damien!
I love to see how you are relating affective learning to the overall ELT world scenario.

As affective learning is a different paradigm, it requires different ways of looking at it and evaluating it. I am very happy to hear more and more about authors and teachers talking about affective components in the planning of their work.

There is some research made and much more has to be done for us all to prove that caring and meaningful learning boosts students' motivation and pleasure while learning.

I love interviewing students and making their voices heard sharing how they felt while learning.

It takes time and there is hope. We are the starters of a reLOVEution!!!!

It has been a pleasure having you in the course, Damien! Let's keep in touch!!!
