A positive relationship between the student and the target language is as important as the positive relationship between the student and the teacher. The positive learning environment is essential.
The classes with my English teacher in primary school were boring. The situation improved in high school, but everything changed when I attended a summer school in Reading, UK. For the first time in my life I enjoyed my English classes; the teachers were so motivating, cheerful, interesting... everything I wanted. I wanted to be like them... I was fascinated by them... and at the age of 20, while still at University, I started working in a language school. I loved teaching so much, and yes, my teachers from UK were my role model! I have been teaching 21 years now and I always try to be entertaining, funny, interesting and motivating for my students. And yes, affective language teaching leads to successful language learning!

ReplyDeleteIt is great to see how much a teacher can influence a student. It was not my case, I fell in love with the language from the start, but if I had had a bad teacher my experience would have been different, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteThank you Silvia. I wish I fell in love with the language from the start :(
ReplyDeleteBut, since then the rest of my English teachers were great, especially my Master studies professors, who motivated me so much that I enrolled Cambridge CELTA, DELTA and plan to continue with Phd...
Renata, you have succeeded in learning English despite not having a special relationship with the teacher, the language or the method. Certainly many more students could have had success if the methods focused on students' learning. Affective learning makes learning possible for all students!
ReplyDeleteI am very happy that you have had teachers with whom you felt identified and fascinated. We do not only learn the subject, we actually learn our teachers. And this learning certainly transcends English. As Silvia commented the influence of a teacher is powerful and we have no idea of how it can change a person's life.
I can not agree more!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Nice pic! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Maria Bossa! ♡
ReplyDeleteI can't agree more with your post that clearly states the responsibility of language teachers not only in teaching English but in touching our life and shaping our future! Great, that you have found your role model, and that has never been too late! I always try to be that inspiring and role model teacher and I feel tremendously glad wehenever one of my students shows their gratitude saying that because of me they didn't give up! that's one of the best rewarding moments in the life of a teacher! marvellous pic of you and your students, I fell in love with the kid wearing glassess,, he looks really smart :))
