Task #2

Task #2
My relationship with English started since I was a student.
What? and when?
I fell in love with English since I was in Primary stage Once Mr. Khalid (My English teacher entered the class). I was so lucky that he taught me in Primary , preparatory and secondary stages (not all years, of course).
Why?
As a student, I was impressed by how knowledgeable he was. I liked the fact that he gave us lots of vocabulary, taught us good pronunciation, spoke English fluently all the time in class. He always praised me for my good performance and my behavior. He trusted me to do some teacher assistant duties. He even disregarded some of my unintended and small flaws (which I appreciated so much as a student).
How I see it now as a teacher?
- He was very confident using the language and teaching it. He gave us lots of extra work that was more helpful than just teaching the course book (this is not common here in many schools).
- Praising me for my performance and behavior gave me self confidence and motivated me to study English, read stories in English, and even write in English.
- Giving me teacher assistant duties helped me a lot at a time when I had problems with my colleagues. So, I felt so confident that a teacher trusts and respects me, nothing else matters.
- Disregarding my small flaws was very motivating as I felt guilty and always studied harder not to make any mistakes !
WOW, I appreciate how you made me think about and write this reflection. When I look at what I wrote now, I can pick up these words "Knowledgeable, praise, confident, appreciate, trust, respect, motivate, helpful" That's really great. Thanks Juan Uribe for this opportunity :)

  2. Yes, I did. I tried to visit him a few weeks ago, but he wasn't there. Will definitely try to go another time. That would be great :)

  3. Hi Ayat!
Isn't it beautiful to be able to relive the beautiful experiences we have had as learners and to realize how they have contributed in making us who we are?

I like very much a quote that says "Children do not care how much you know until they know how much you care." Certainly Mr Khalid made the class feel very safe by showing in his special way that he was there to help students learn. The important characteristics and postures that you mention at the end of your post surely have contributed positively to make learning alive and memorable.

My sister Sosô once told me she had had a teacher she loved because of the way he treated her and made her enjoy learning. I asked her if she had told him and she said she hadn't. The other day she met him at the mall by chance and she told him. That must have been a beautiful moment!

Please send my greeting to him when you see Mr Khalid. Maybe we can even have tea with him next time I go to Egypt!
