Task 1: important aspects when planning a storytelling activity.
For me the Yls I teach range from 8 to 13 years old. So, the planning is a bit different.
First comes the choice of the story itself so that it's age appropriate and they won't think it's childish (most of them at that age act as if they are grown ups).
I read it carefully and prepare some pre-teach vocabulary activities in order to be sure that they will understand the story completely.
Through my experience in realized they all prefer to listen to the story from the teacher instead of having copies themselves.
I prepare some pictures to put them up on the IWB if the class is big and might not be able to see the story in my hand.
After the story and some discussion we usually do a project. It can be drawing or coloring or acting. So I need to make sure I have the needed material for the project.
While telling the story is need to make sure that they are all comfortable. Dim light and background slow music can help set the scene. Varying my tone depending on the character is important for students to know who is saying what in the story.

  1. Hi Maha!

I can clearly see your attention with making sure the story is suitable for your students and also making sure they are able to follow it and enjoy it. Making it meaningful age wise and language wise is essential to affective language learning.

The first because it speaks to the heart and the second because it speaks to the mind. Then your students are surely comfortable.

I am sure they prefer listening to you than reading it along. They can see your faces and better appreciate the storytelling itself than having already the challenge of seeing the printed language. This can come in a second moment with the projects you have mentioned. I personally like to have students in small groups retelling the story to each other.

Once there was, and twice there wasn't!
