I mentioned about my puppet, Ruby, the Raccoon with her garbage can in our Week 3 session. Here she is in two photos! (Sorry I don't have a close-up photo of her.) 

In the first, she's talking to the children and in the second, she's pulling the letter of the week from her garbage can (with a little help from me :). This class was an International Story-time for Toddlers who speak many different languages. They loved to come up to interact with Ruby! :-)

  1. Juan, I loved all the ideas you shared with us today in our session!! I'm now thinking about ways to use them in my story time where there are many language backgrounds and the children are just learning to speak.  :-)

    Let me know how the ideas have worked with your multi-language group. I can give the precise words students need because I speak their language. I am sure most of them will also work as we are able to perceive from context and students' gestures what they want to say. 

    I love puppets like Ruby because we can surprise students with things we hide. I like to make questions and induce students to give answers and then "by magic" the puppet gets that thing. Students go crazy!

    Wish you, Ruby the raccoon, and your students great memorable moments together!!!

  5. Hi Juan! I love your suggestions about making questions and induce students to give answers! I will definitely try that as soon as possible.

    My story time was part of a larger program in Seattle where we worked with children of the many international parents who moved there to work for Microsoft or other international companies in the area. Since our little ones came from such a variety of first language backgrounds, I let the moms speak the word in that language when it's introduced, and further reinforce it through gestures.

    I just moved back to So Cal about two months ago, and Ruby stayed up in Seattle with those that are continuing that story time. So, I've just recently ordered a new 'Ruby', and am considering a name for my new puppet. :-) I'm also researching how and where to set up a similar story time program here, checking out the existing library story times to see what is currently available. So, at the moment, I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to create memorable moments with my new little raccoon in the trash can, and can't wait to use the ideas shared in your seminars over the past 4 weeks!! :-)
